Derrick Rose and Tom Thibodeau Win 2011 NBA MVP and Coach of the Year: MVPs and COYs, Same Team, Same Year.

The Chicago Bulls‘ tandem Derrick Rose and Tom Thibodeau have taken home the NBA‘s MVP and Coach of the Year hardware for the 2010-2011 season.

We’ve been looking at the string of NBA awards lately at Sports List of the Day.  Two days ago we listed all the MVPs by team.  Yesterday, we looked at all Rookies of the Year that went on to win MVP.

Today’s list are those occurrences in NBA history when the year’s MVP and Coach of the Year awards went to the same team.  It’s happened 12 times.  Four of those times (*) the teams went on to win the championship.

1. 1965 — Bill Russell and Red Auerbach (Boston Celtics) *

2. 1966 — Wilt Chamberlain and Dolph Schayes (Philadelphia 76ers)

3. 1969 — Wes Unseld and Gene Shue (Baltimore Bullets)

4. 1970 — Willis Reed and Red Holzman (New York Knicks) *

5. 1973 — Dave Cowens and Tom Heinsohn (Boston Celtics)

6. 1990 — Magic Johnson and Pat Riley (Los Angeles Lakers)

7. 1996 — Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson (Chicago Bulls) *

8. 2001 — Allen Iverson and Larry Brown  (Philadelphia 76ers)

9. 2003 — Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich (San Antonio Spurs) *

10. 2005 — Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni (Phoenix Suns)

11. 2009 — LeBron James and Mike Brown (Cleveland Cavaliers)

12. 2011 — Derrick Rose and Tom Thibodeau (Chicago Bulls)
