NFL: Teams with the Most Wins and All-Time Regular Season Records

1920 Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears Were Called the Decatur Staleys in 1920 (americanmemorabilia.com)

The NFL was formed in 1920 as the APFA (American Professional Football Association).  There were 11 teams in the first iteration of the league, with only the Chicago Bears and Arizona (then Chicago) Cardinals still remaining today.  The Green Bay Packers joined in 1921.

In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League.  A few years later, 1925, New York fielded their first team – the Giants.

The 1930’s saw the addition of the Detroit Lions (1930), Washington Redskins (1932), Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles (both 1933) and the Cleveland (today St. Louis) Rams (1937).

1940’s

49ers (1946), Browns (1946)

1950’s

Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts (1953)

1960’s

Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans) (1960), San Diego Chargers (1960), Oakland Raiders (1960), New York Jets (1960), New England Patriots (1960), Kansas City Chiefs (1960), Denver Broncos (1960), Dallas Cowboys (1960), Buffalo Bills (1960), Minnesota Vikings (1961), Miami Dolphins (1966), Atlanta Falcons (1966), New Orleans Saints (1967), Cincinnati Bengals (1968)

1970’s

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1976), Seattle Seahawks (1976)

1990’s – present

Jacksonville Jaguars (1995), Carolina Panthers (1995), Baltimore Ravens (1996), Houston Texans (2002)

Anyway, whew, that was a tangent, but that covers the founding years of all 32 current NFL teams.  The years above reflect AFL foundings for teams like the Jets and Patriots.

As do today’s lists below – the all-time regular season wins and winning percentage numbers for every team (through 2011 Week 3).   The Chicago Bears are the best in both categories.
