Tiger Woods Continues to Sink

ESPN is reporting that Tiger Woods will fall out of the Top 50 in the next Official Golf Rankings.  That is the first time since 1996.

The rankings were introduced in 1986.  Here are those golfers (15 of them) that achieved the No. 1 ranking since then, in order of the first time they claimed it. Several of these golfers have lost the top spot only to reclaim it again later. For example, Tiger Woods has been the No. 1 golfer in the world on 10 separate occasions.

Check out my source, golftoday.co.uk, to see the chronological history of all the No.1 golfers.

Updated July 22, 2012 to include Rory McIlroy. But Luke Donald is still the current No. 1, having reclaimed the crown.

1. Bernhard Langer (GER)

2. Seve Ballesteros (SPA)

3. Greg Norman (AUS)

4. Nick Faldo (ENG)

5. Ian Woosnam (WAL)

6. Fred Couples (USA)

7. Nick Price (ZIM)

8. Tom Lehman (USA)

9. Tiger Woods (USA)

10. Ernie Els (RSA)

11. David Duval (USA)

12. Vijay Singh (FIJ)

13. Lee Westwood (ENG)

14. Martin Kaymer (GER)

15. Luke Donald (ENG) – Current No. 1

16. Rory McIlroy (NIR)

The No. 1 golf ranking has changed hands 54 times.  Of the 16 players above, 11 have captured/recaptured the title more than once.
