Bobby Valentine is the New Boston Red Sox Manager: Bobby V’s Lifetime Managing Record (U.S. and Japan)

Bobby Valentine has been named the new Boston Red Sox manager and will be announced as so on Thursday.  He is the 44th different manager in the team’s history. It’s going to be an interesting 2012 in the A.L. East, to say the least.

Bobby V. is known for both his baseball acumen, wacky behavior and polarizing nature.  Love him or hate him, he brings a lot to the table.  The Red Sox will be in the mix.

Valentine managed the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets, taking the Mets to the playoffs twice and the World Series once (overmatched by a New York Yankee dynasty in 2000).

He had more success in Japan, where he served two terms (1995 and 2004-2009) as the manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Nippon Professional Baseball‘s (NPB) Pacific League.

The Marines play out of Chiba City.  The NPB is Japan’s equivalent of MLB. One notable difference is that Japanese baseball allows ties.  During the regular season, if the game is still tied after the 12th inning, it’s a tie.

Valentine went to the playoffs twice with the Marines, and won it all – the Nippon Series – in 2005.

His MLB lifetime regular season managing record is 1,117-1,072 (.510).  For NPB, he is 494-450-23 (.523).

NFL Quarterbacks That Have Been Sacked the Most

Brett Favre Has Also Been Sacked the Most

Brett Favre Has Also Been Sacked the Most (windycitygridiron.com)

Some time back Sports List of the Day showed you the NFL’s all-time sack leaders.

But who’s been sacked the most?

Well, the all-time leader in most of the important QB statistical categories, Brett Favre, is at the top of the list again.  Add this ignominious record to his, say, all-time leading interception record.

Here are the top 25 quarterbacks that have been sacked the most.

What’s interesting about this list is the type of quarterback that is represented.  Two types mostly.  You’re either a sluggishly immobile QB (Favre, Elway, Krieg, Bledsoe, Testaverde) or a running QB (Cunningham, McNabb, Young).  In both cases, these guys held onto the ball just a little too long.

Additionally, note which long-time quarterbacks are NOT on this list: Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, Kurt Warner.  These QB’s are somewhere in between – agile in the pocket, but not aggressive runners.  And they’re all guilty of having a quick release which sure doesn’t hurt.

1. Brett Favre 525
2. John Elway 516
3. Dave Krieg 494
4. Randall Cunningham 484
5. Phil Simms 477
6. Drew Bledsoe 467
7. Warren Moon 458
8. Vinny Testaverde 417
9. Donovan McNabb 410
10. Ken Anderson 398
11. Archie Manning 396
12.  Mark Brunell 390
13. Chris Chandler 380

15. Craig Morton 373
16. Ron Jaworski 363
17. Neil Lomax 362
18. Jim Harbaugh 361
19. Jeff George 358
19. Steve Young 358
21. Steve Bartkowski 356
22. Ken O’Brien 353
23. Joe Theismann 340
24. Kerry Collins 337

Urban Meyer Named Head Coach of Ohio State Buckeyes: Meyer’s Coaching Record

Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer (tigerrag.com)

Urban Meyer has only coached at the college level for 10 years, yet he is already one of the best coaches in history (thanks to his two national championships and 7-1 Bowl record) and also one of the most coveted.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will be announcing Meyer as their next head coach today at a 5:15PM (local time) press conference.  Word is it will be a seven-year stint for $40 million (ESPN.com)

Meyer took a year off to both spend time with his family and address concerns over his health, but the lifetime .819 coach (a ridiculous 104-23) couldn’t stay away.

Meyer began his career with the Bowling Green State Falcons with an impressive 17-6 record over two years.  He moved on to the Utah Utes for another two years where he went 22-2, including his first bowl appearances and an undefeated 2004, before cementing his legacy with the Florida Gators.

In his six years with the Gators, Meyer went to six major bowls and took the BCS Championship in 2006 and 2008.
