Kyrie Irving Takes It To the Hoop Against Ricky Rubio and Blake Griffin in the 2012 NBA Rising Stars Challenge

Team Chuck defeated Team Shaq 145-133 tonight in the NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge, an NBA All-Star Weekend festivity that now pits mixed teams of rookies and second-year players against each other.

Kyrie Irving, who scored 34 points and is the current favorite for Rookie of the Year, walked away with the game’s MVP honors.

There have been numerous format changes to this annual contest since its inception in 1994.

1994, 1995: Rookies vs. Rookies

1996-1998: Rookies East vs. Rookies West

1999: Lockout

2000-2011: Rookies vs. Sophomores

2012: Mixed Rookie/Sophomore Teams
