Austin Carr Scored 61 Points Against Ohio in the 1970 NCAA Tournament

Who has scored the most points in an NCAA Tournament game?  It’s Notre Dame‘s Austin Carr, the only college baller to breach the 60-point barrier in postseason play.

It gets better for Mr. Carr.  Of the top 10 point totals in tourney history below, Austin places four times (twice in losses, indicated in the far right column).  This was all back in 1970 and 1971.

In fact, it seems they just don’t score like they used to.  David Robinson is the only player to appear in the top 10 post-1978.  So, what about the 90′s, and 00′s?

Bo Kimble of Loyola Marymount scored 45 against New Mexico State in a 111-92 Round 1 victory in 1990. And Syracuse‘s Gerry McNamara posted 43 against Brigham Young in an 80-75 Round 1 2004 win.
