Wayne Gretzky and the Top 10 Most Hat Tricks in NHL History
Posted by Vin Getz
Wayne Gretzky strikes again. He tops another all time stats list: most hat tricks.
The Great One notched a neat 50 hat tricks in his career. He’s followed by Mario Lemieux, who notched 40 of his own in over 500 fewer games.
Mike Bossy, going back to the glory days of the New York Islanders, rounds out the top three. He’s just a hat trick behind Lemieux at 39.
These are the top 10 skaters in NHL history with the most hat tricks: a list of the ultimate offensive players to ever hit the ice.
Teemu Selanne is the closest active player. If he signs on to play another season, he’ll crack the top 10; He’s just one behind Jari Kurri.
Thanks to my source on this one, cbssports.com, where the list is extended to the top 15.
I’ve also compared number of hat tricks to number of games played for a look at who in the top 10 were the most proficient hat tricksters.
Check out old school skater Cy Denneny who played for the old school Ottawa Senators and the Boston Bruins between 1917-18 and 1928-29. Denneny had a hat trick in over seven percent of his games!
But how about something a little more modern? Mike Bossy scored a hat trick in a full five percent (and change) of his games. I find that remarkable.
