MLB: Top 20 Players with the Most Doubles in a Season

Earl Webb Has Held the Single-Season Doubles Record for Over 80 Years

Yesterday, Sports List of the Day gave you baseball’s all-time career doubles leaders. Tris Speaker had the most. He also appears on today’s list – the most doubles hit in a single-season. Speaker hit 59, seventh most in a season, in 1923.

But it’s Earl Webb, who hit 67 for the Boston Red Sox in 1931, who holds the single-season record.

Hitting a lot of doubles in one year was once a frequent occurrence – look at all the players on today’s list from the 1920′s and 1930′s (12 of the 20, including the top six). Then, nothing for the most part, until around 1999/the 2000′s. Only Ed Delahanty (1899) and George Kell (1950) make an appearance outside those two time periods. Interesting.

But there are still a lot more players who have hit at least 50 doubles in a single season, and they represent different decades – but again the 1920′s, 1930′s, 1990′s and 2000′s dominate. Check out the full list and see for yourself, from my source baseball-reference.com.
