Prince Fielder Wins His Second Home Run Derby

Prince Fielder won his second Home Run Derby last night, becoming the first player to win it for two different leagues.

Baseball’s annual All-Star Home Run Derby has been around for almost thirty years now, believe it or not.

The first one, in 1985, fielded players like Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk, Steve Garvey and Jack Clark. Remember them? How about Cincinnati Red Dave Parker? He won the premiere event.

Since then, there have been 25 other winners, only two of whom won it more than once: Prince Fielder and Ken Griffey, Jr., who won it three times.

In 1986, Darryl Strawberry and Wally Joyner tied.

Aside from the Seattle Mariners (Griffey), the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Anaheim/California Angels have also had three derby titles apiece.

There was a major format change to the event in the year 2000, when multiple knock-out rounds were added. Before that, it was just one round, guy with the most home runs takes the crown.

Here’s a list of all the Home Run Derby Winners and how many home runs they hit in the final round (when applicable) and total.
