The Top 10 Longest Runs in NFL History

Tony Dorsett Has the Longest Run in NFL History

Tony Dorsett, the Dallas Cowboys‘ running back of the late 1970s and 1980s, is the only back in the history of the NFL to have a 99-yard run to his credit.

That’s the longest rush the game has seen, or ever will.

“This is because NFL rules call for the game to be played on a field 100 yards long. The yardage begins with the one-yard line, not the zero. Therefore, the longest run possible in the NFL is 99 yards in length. The closest that anyone could come to breaking the record would be to tie Dorsett and share the mark with him.”*

And the NFL doesn’t do tenths (or thirds), as in 99.1 or 99.2 yards.

In total, and surprisingly, only 22 runnings backs have had a run of 90 yards or more. Bob Gage‘s 97 yards off a fake punt make it 23 players all together.
