Ray Bourque Has the Most Recorded Shots on Goal in NHL History
Wayne Gretzky? Gordie Howe? Brett Hull? Nope.
It’s a defenseman.
The great Boston Bruin (mostly), 19-time All Star and five-time James Norris Memorial Trophy Winner for top defenseman, Ray Bourque, took the most shots on goal in NHL history (or at least since the 1967-68 expansion that doubled the number of teams in the league).
Bourque is joined by two other defensemen on the list top 20 skaters with the most shots on goal – Al MacInnis in third and Paul Coffey.
To be fair to Howe and the early guys, “shots on goal” was not officially recorded until that 1967-68 season. So, for example, Howe finished with over 1,100 shots on goal in just five of his 26 years of service – and that was at the very end of his career. It is quite likely, in my opinion, that Howe and a few other old-timers would have had over 6,000 shots.
As it is, only Bourque does.
The 5,000 shot club has five members.
Tell you what. I think the Calgary Flames‘ Jarome Iginla is going to get there. Forty-year old Jaromir Jagr needs at least another season. And 42-year old Teemu Selanne? Not going to happen. Those are the three actives on today’s list.
