The 2013 Denver Broncos May Become The Highest Scoring Offense In NFL History Sunday

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are on course to become the most explosive offense in NFL history. They’re just 18 points away from the highest scoring offense ever with just a game to go. They’d supplant the 16-0 Tom Brady-led 2007 New England Patriots.

Brady’s Patriot squads, though, have overall been the most explosive teams in history. They appear four times amongst the 20 teams who have scored the most points in a season.

Kurt Warner‘s St. Louis Rams packed quite a punch, too (three appearances) as did Drew BreesNew Orleans Saints at one time (two times, really).

Most of these offenses made their marks recently – more than half since 2000, and all but two since 1991 – but there are a couple anachronisms in there. How about the Dan Marino-helmed 1984 Miami Dolphins and the even better Joe Theismann-led 1983 Washington Redskins.

UPDATED LIST: Through the 2013 season. The 2013 Denver Broncos are now the highest-scoring team of all time, passing the 2007 New England Patriots. Also note: these are just NFL teams. AFL and AAFC are not included. If the AFL and AAFC were included: the 1961 Houston Oilers (AFL) scored 513 points and the 1948 San Francisco 49ers (AAFC) scored 495 points.
