The Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild Advance After Game 7 Wins On The Road In The 2014 Stanley Cup Western Conference Quarter-Finals

Do you know how hard it is to win Game 7 on the road in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Pretty hard. Not impossible, but tough to come by. Even the best of the best have only done it five times.

We’re talking over 80 years of best-of-seven series. The NHL introduced that format (for at least one round of the playoffs) back in the 1930′s.

So, hat’s off to the Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild who both just won their Game 7′s on the road in the 2014 Western Conference Quarter-Finals. What’s crazier, the Kings just became only the fourth team in NHL history and the fifth American sports team ever to come back from being down 3-0 and win Game 7.

Both the Kings and Wild have won Game 7 on the road twice before. In 2003, the Wild did it twice in one postseason, in back-to-back rounds, before getting swept 4-0 in the Western Conference Finals by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Oh well.

All together, 24 teams have won a Game 7 on the road 61 times. The Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs are the fivers.

I’m scratching together the exact rounds and games. In the meantime, thanks to the best source around: hockey-reference.com and their play index, where I ran this query.
