NHL: The 10 Best and 10 Worst Playoff Teams of the Past 25 Years

The Best Playoff Team In Hockey: The Detroit Red Wings

The Best Playoff Team In Hockey: The Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs 24 of the last 25 seasons. In fact, they have made it the past 24 seasons in a row, collecting four Stanley Cups along they way (via six Finals appearances). The Wings are unquestionably the best NHL playoff team of the past 25 years.

The New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins have three Cups over this period and sport an 80 percent playoff probability. In other words, over the past 25 seasons, these two teams made the postseason four out of every five years.

The St. Louis Blues have also made the playoffs 80 percent of the time, but have no Stanley Cup Finals appearances to claim. They actually haven’t been to the Finals since 1969-70.

What about the worst playoff teams of the past 25 seasons?

Most are relatively new teams. Five of the 10 (11 with ties) worst playoff teams haven’t even been around 25 years. The rest joined the league with the third expansion in 1972-73 or later. Well, except for one of the Original Six!: The Toronto Maple Leafs. They haven’t won a Cup, either, since the 1960’s. Egad, get it together classic team!

NHL: Boston Bruins and Teams with the Most 100-Point Seasons

The Boston Bruins Have The Most 100-Point Seasons; The Philadelphia Flyers, The Highest Percentage of 100-Point Seasons

The Boston Bruins Have The Most 100-Point Seasons; The Philadelphia Flyers, The Highest Percentage of 100-Point Seasons

The Boston Bruins have breached the 100-point barrier 21 times, most of any NHL team and the only to do it over 20 times.

The Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers have collected 100 points or more in a season 19 times.

But the Flyers have only been around 47 years (compared to the Bruins and Red Wings at 90 and 88 seasons, respectively) – giving them the highest percentage of 100-point seasons: 40.43 percent. Very impressive.

Overall, six teams have had double-digit 100-point seasons. Four have tallied 100 points for at least 30 percent of their franchise’s history. The Flyers and New Jersey Devils are in both clubs.

NHL: Montreal Canadiens and Most Times with the Most Points in the League

The Montreal Canadiens Last Led The NHL In Points In 1977-78

The Montreal Canadiens Last Led The NHL In Points In 1977-78

Yesterday, Sports List of the Day checked out NHL teams with the most Presidents’ Trophies – given to the team that finishes the season with the most points.

But that award has only been around since 1985-86. What about all those seasons from 1984-85 and before?

Today, we tally the comprehensive list of points-leaders from the very beginning (1917-18) through the Presidents’ Trophy era. In other words, here is every regular-season points champion, sorted by those teams with the most points titles.

And, yet again, as with so many other team records, the Montreal Canadiens are at the top. They have been the points champ 21 times (about 22 percent of the NHL’s 97 seasons). But get this – the last time they did it was nearly 40 years ago!

That’s not as bad as the Toronto Maple Leafs, though. They haven’t taken the points title since 1962-63.

Still – what’s really important, here? Having the most points at the end of the season or hoisting the Stanley Cup? The Leafs have won it all twice and the Canadiens thrice during those “droughts” above.

The Detroit Red Wings have 19 points crowns of their own. Together, the Red Wings and Canadiens have led the league in points 40 times (41 percent of all seasons).

Eleven teams have never won the points crown, including, surprisingly, the New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings.
