James Harden, 2011-12 NBA Sixth Man of the Year

The Oklahoma City Thunder‘s James Harden has won the 2012 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. The award is given each year to the league’s best player off the bench.

Bobby Jones, “Gentleman of the NBA” and member of the champion 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers, won the first.

The CelticsKevin McHale (2) and Bill Walton won the next three as Boston went to the Finals three years in a row (’84, ’85, ’86).

But it’s the Phoenix Suns who have best utilized their first man off the bench in the past 30 years. They have four awards, the most.

Here are the Sixth Man of the Year Awards by team and chronologically.

McHale, Ricky Pierce (Bucks) and Detlef Schrempf  (Pacers) are the only two-time winners.

Thanks to my source, basketball-reference.com, where you can see the award winners’ stats.

UPDATED LIST: Apr. 23, 2013 to include the New York Knicks’ J.R. Smith, winner of the 2013 Sixth Man of the Year. Well deserved. Original post above from May 10, 2012.

Tyson Chandler and NBA Defensive Players of the Year

Tyson Chandler Wins the Knicks' First Defensive Player of the Year Award

Tyson Chandler Wins the Knicks’ First Defensive Player of the Year Award

The New York KnicksTyson Chandler has been named the 2011-12 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He didn’t just take the Knicks’ defense to another level, he brought defense to the team in the first place. The Knicks were notorious for not playing any the last few years.

Winning the title with the Dallas Mavericks last season and playing in New York is making Tyson Chandler a household name.

But, do you know who the Milwaukee Bucks‘ Sidney Moncrief is?

Moncrief was the first (and second) NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

The award has been given to the NBA‘s best defensive player beginning with the 1982-83 season.

Tyson Chandler is the 17th player to win it. Nine have won it once and eight more than once. Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace are the most decorated with four awards.

And, look at that, even Michael Jordan won one.

NHL Rookie of the Year (Calder Memorial Trophy) Awards by Team

Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes is the 2010-11 NHL Rookie of the Year (zimbio.com)

The NHL has been awarding Rookie of the Year, also known as the Calder Memorial Trophy, longer than any of the four major American sports.  MLB’s first award went to Jackie Robinson in 1947.  The NFL gives out two awards: Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year.  Both started in 1967.  And the NBA wasn’t even around until 1949 (BAA in 1946).  The NBA RoY was first awarded in 1952-53.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have the most winners at nine.  The Original Six are the top six.  They’ve all been around since at least 1926.

Ed Litzenberger is the only Rookie of the Year to play for two teams.  He is listed under the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks.
