The Longest-Serving Captains in NHL History (With the Same Team)

Steve Yzerman Is The Longest Reigning Captain In NHL History

Steve Yzerman Is The Longest Serving Captain In NHL History, With The Same Team: The Detroit Red Wings

One more NHL post in between before heading back to the NFL playoffs and NCAA Championship Game…and then into the NHL and NBA seasons and postseasons, when you’ll be seeing plenty of hockey and basketball posts.

Here’s an interesting look at the “position” of NHL Captain.

Captains have actually been around since the first season of the NHL. In 1917-18, the Montreal Canadiens named center (and eventual Hall of Famer) Newsy Lalonde their captain.

Other teams followed suit in the late 1920’s, and the captain has been (mostly) a staple since.

No team is required to designate a captain (C), or alternate (A, backup) captain. Most teams at one time or another have not had one, but far more often, in every franchise’s history, at least one skater has assumed the title per season.

And soooo…what’s the point? Being captain doesn’t get you a free penalty shot or any other one-ups.

There is, of course, the whole – and very true – leadership role.

But there is also something quite functional, and in an organizational sense, essential. The captain is the only player on the team that is allowed to discuss on-ice, call or rule disputes with the refs.

Below are the longest-serving captains in NHL history: 24 with nine years or more leading the same team.

Want to see every captain your team has ever suited? Or how about every captain ever? Then you should check out my source, hockey-reference.com.

NHL: Every Team’s Career Points and Goals Leader

The 30 Teams Of The 2014-15 NHL

The 30 Teams Of The 2014-15 NHL. Name ‘Em…And Their All-Time Points And Goals Leaders

Boy, it’s been a while since we took on some NHL around here. Sorry hockey fans! Don’t worry – they’re coming. I’m a hockey fan, too, and a New York Islanders fan, at that. So, you know it’s all good right now. It’s time to get some hockey on, squeeze some in between NFL playoff weekends.

The last time Sports List of the Day checked out the NHL was back during the 2013-14 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Click on the NHL tab above or the NHL link in the right column to see that and to follow hockey posts in sequence from the most recent.

It’s a whole new season.

Let’s start up a plethora of puck posts for 2014-15 with a popular offensive category (or two) – points and goals.

And custom made for your team, at that. Your all-time leaders in both categories, below. Franchise legacies are noted with an asterisk – the current team version leaderships are reflected in the bottom two tables.

You might also want to review the NHL’s overall all-time points and goals leaders and see if your guys make the big list.
