The Longest Serving Baseball (MLB), Football (NFL), Basketball (NBA) and Hockey (NHL) Commissioners

So, after all of these years – and long ones with a lot of baseball change and controversy (steroids, broken records, interleague play, wild cards, central divisions, four new teams and more) – Bud Selig is stepping down as baseball’s commissioner. Rob Manfred will take over in January. Of course, he has, as he told ESPN, “very big shoes to fill.”

And 23 years worth to catch up to Selig, the second-longest serving MLB commissioner, one season less than baseball’s first, Judge Landis.

But what about all commissioners (or in the case of the NHL, presidents)?

Below check out the longest serving commissioners of the four major North American sports – combined and later by sport.

And so you can get your bearings a bit, a final list that runs everybody down chronologically.

NHL Stanley Cup Finals: Teams that Have Come Back From Down 2-0

The Boston Bruins Came Back After Being Down 2-0 To The Vancouver Canucks To Win The 2011 Stanley Cup

The Boston Bruins Came Back After Being Down 2-0 To The Vancouver Canucks To Win The 2011 Stanley Cup

Never mind coming back from being down 3-0 in any postseason series. It’s practically as impossible to come back and win the title after being down 2-0, at least where the Stanley Cup Finals are concerned.

Believe it or not, it has happened only five times in NHL history. Now that was fewer than expected, for sure.

And it’s bad news for New York Rangers fans, who find their team in just such a predicament against the Los Angeles Kings.

It’s arguably even worse news for Detroit Red Wings fans. Their team has been the victim three times.

The 1941-42* Toronto Maple Leafs were down 3-0. They are the only North American sports team to overcome that deficit to win a title. They lost the first two at home, too, as did the 1965-66 Montreal Canadiens.
