NBA: Raised and Retired Numbers by Team
The Boston Celtics Have So Many Championship Banners in the Rafters, They Have to Squeeze Their Similarly Numerous Retired Numbers Into Little Boxes
Sports List of the Day NBA fans – here is your personal list of all the league’s retired “numbers” – and those not officially retired that hang in the rafters anyway.
Let me explain.
Some numbers are outright retired. You’ll never see another Boston Celtic wear No. 33 again (Larry Bird) or another Los Angeles Laker wear No. 32 (Magic Johnson).
But you might see a Philadelphia 76er wearing No. 2 (Moses Malone) or a Los Angeles Laker wearing No. 99 (George Mikan).
In the far right column, there are explanations for quirks like the above, the proper team name for whom the player’s number is retired (ex: Atlanta vs. St. Louis Hawks) and other explanatory notes.
The Boston Celtics have the most retired “numbers” or jerseys, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers. Few things make greater sense.
Several players have their numbers retired by more than one team. Wilt Chamberlain is the only player to have his number retired by three franchises (Warriors, 76ers, Lakers).
Those with two are: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Bucks, Lakers); Charles Barkley (76ers, Suns); Clyde Drexler (Trail Blazers, Rockets); Bob Lanier (Pistons, Bucks); Oscar Robertson (Kings, Bucks); Earl Monroe (Knicks, Wizards); Moses Malone (76ers, Rockets); Julius Erving (76ers, Nets); Nate Thurmond (Cavaliers, Warriors); Pete Maravich (Jazz, Hornets) and Michael Jordan (Bulls, Heat).
Oh, and both the Magic and Kings have both retired the No. 6 in honor of the fans. I wonder if the Kings will keep it retired when they move to Seattle (zing).
Asterisks denote players who died while actively a members of their team. Their numbers are retired in memory.

Major League Baseball’s Retired Numbers by Team

All together, 187 “numbers,” mostly for players, have been retired by major league baseball clubs.
In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s rookie season, MLB retired his No. 42 for every team.
The New York Yankees have the most retired numbers – a flat out 16 players and managers. The Giants franchise (including the New York years), in second, has retired 11 player and manager numbers – but also two broadcasters’.
In parentheses beside each team below is the number of retired players and managers. In some cases, as with the Giants above, a broadcaster, executive, owner, proponent, coach or even the fans have had their “numbers” retired. In those cases, the first number is the number of retired player and manager numbers, followed by the whole total for the team.
Several players have their numbers retired by more than one team, led by Nolan Ryan, whose jersey hangs in the rafters of three different ballparks: Astros, Angels and Rangers. Then, you have nine others retired by two teams: Carlton Fisk (Red Sox, White Sox)…Casey Stengel (Yankees, Mets)…Frank Robinson (Reds, Orioles)…Greg Maddux (Braves, Cubs)…Hank Aaron (Braves, Brewers)…Reggie Jackson (A’s, Yankees)…Rod Carew (Twins, Angels)…Rollie Fingers (A’s, Brewers)…and Sparky Anderson (Reds, Tigers).

Super Bowl Boxes: The Best Numbers To Have for Every Quarter

A big tradition Super Bowl time is of course participation in the ol’ Super Bowl boxes pool, where for anywhere from $.50 or $1.00 to thousands and more, one can buy one (and usually more) of 100 boxes – each box representative of the final digit of a game score.
You get four plays – one for the score at the end of each quarter. So, for example, if the score is 21-17 in the third quarter and you have the “1″ and “7″ for the right teams in that quarter, you win. Usually prizes are biggest for the halftime and final scores.
Anyway – so which numbers come out the most and which the least? You probably have a good general sense, but here are the specifics. I went through every quarter (180 qtrs X 2 teams=360) of all 45 Super Bowls and crunched the numbers.
“0″ appears the most – a third more than second place “7,” followed by “3.” Those make a lot of sense. But then you have “4″ and “6″ rounding out the top five. Not surprisingly, “2,” “5″ and “8″ bring up the rear.
That leaves “1″ and “9,” which I thought odd, not that popular. They and “2,” “5″ and “8″ have never appeared in the first quarter ever. The latter three are the absolute worst across the board.
Check out the breakdown for every quarter, though. It so happens suddenly that “1,” has the third most outcomes in the Final score.
