New L.A. Lakers Head Coach Mike D’Antoni’s Career Coaching and Playing Records
Posted by Vin Getz
Mike D’Antoni isn’t just a head coach. He played too, you know.
But first, lets’ look at the coaching record of the latest L.A. Laker leader.
After coaching eight years in Italy, D’Antoni’s first coaching gig in the NBA was with the Denver Nuggets in 1998-99. He ran the team to a personal career-worst .280 W-L percentage and was quickly canned.
Four seasons later, D’Antoni returned to the NBA where he’s now had a job, thanks to the Lakers hire, every year since.
Following the 2004-05 season, D’Antoni won the NBA Coach of the Year with the Phoenix Suns. Steve Nash joined D’Antoni and Amar’e Stoudemire in Phoenix that year, and they took the Suns to a 62-20 record and the Western Conference Finals. The season before, the Suns were 29-53.
I have a hunch D’Antoni doesn’t like the San Antonio Spurs much.
As for his playing career, that’s, uh, a little less distinguished (see below). D’Antoni never started a game as a pro player in either the NBA or ABA.

Sean Payton Suspended Without Pay for 1 Year. Payton’s Coaching and Playing Records
Posted by Vin Getz
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for a full year in the wake of what is being called “Bountygate,” where then-Saints defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, set up a pay scale for taking opponents down or out of games. Williams is suspended indefinitely.
Here’s a final look at Payton for a while – his coaching history from college through the pros. He and Drew Brees took the 2009 Saints to the peak.
Payton played college ball for Eastern Illinois University. He wound up becoming an undrafted quarterback, but got his chance with the 1987 football strike…and, yup, was a replacement player. He made it into three games for the Chicago Bears and was 8 for 23 for 79 yards with 0 TDs and an INT.
