All together, 10 pitchers have won both awards in the same year.

The Cy Young was first given in 1956.  The MVP, however, has been awarded since 1911.  In the intervening 45 years, 14 pitchers won the MVP as well.

Justin Verlander Wins AL Cy Young; Teams with the Most Cy Young Winners

The Cy Young Award for the Best Pitcher of the National and American Leagues

The Cy Young Award for the Best Pitcher of the National and American Leagues (blownsavewin.com)

Justin Verlander, the Detroit Tigers‘ triple crown winner (24 W, 2.40 ERA, 250 K), has been unanimously voted the 2011 A.L. Cy Young winner.

The National League winner will be announced tomorrow.  It will likely be the other pitching triple crown winner, the Los Angeles DodgersClayton Kershaw (21 W, 2.28 ERA, 248 K).

That would give the already-leading L.A. Dodgers their ninth Cy Young.

Here’s a list of all the Cy Young winners, by team.

The Cy Young was first awarded in 1956 to the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Don Newcombe.  Between 1956 and 1966, only one Cy Young was given to the best pitcher in all of the majors.  Beginning in 1967, separate awards were given to the best pitcher in each of the National and American Leagues.

Justin Verlander Gets 20th Win: 20-Game Winners of the Past 20 Years

The Detroit TigersJustin Verlander is the first pitcher in the major leagues this season to notch his 20th win – his first 20-win season.  He defeated Carl Pavano and the Minnesota Twins 6-4. Verlander yielded the four earned runs in six innings of eight-hit ball.  He  recorded six strikeouts and allowed three walks in the outing.

It wasn’t easy. “Name a pitch, I had trouble finding consistency with anything,” Verlander said. (espn.com)

The 20th win is the victory milestone for which all pitchers aim each season.  Hall of Fame hurlers are often noted for the number of 20-win seasons under their belt.  There is a big difference between a 19-game winner and a 20-game winner, at least in the minds of analysts and the average fan.

So, let’s refresh our memory of 20-game winners from the past 20 years.  Here they are in today’s Sports List of the Day, Hurricane Irene Special.

CC Sabathia was a 20-game winner last year (his first time) and looks poised to do it again.  He’s at 17 wins.  Not so much for Roy Halladay (15 wins, maybe he’ll get there) and Adam Wainwright (out for season, Tommy John surgery).

Halladay has three 20-win seasons to his credit already.  Other multiple 20-game winners of the last 20 years? Bartolo Colon, Roy Oswalt, Curt Schilling, Jamie Moyer, Andy Pettitte, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Tom Glavine, Jack McDowell and Greg Maddux.

Other possibilities this year: Ian Kennedy of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Clayton Kershaw of the L.A. Dodgers lead the National League with 16 wins apiece.

The L.A. Angels‘ Jered Weaver and Milwaukee Brewers‘ Yovani Gallardo have 15.
