Tom Brady and the New England Patriots Celebrate Brady’s 50th Touchdown of the 2007 Season

A nice, round “50” is the record for most passing touchdowns in a season, courtesy Tom Brady, Randy Moss and the New England Patriots of 2007. Moss caught 23 of those for the single-season receiving TD record.

From the very beginnings of football, back in the mid- to late- 1800’s, into the early 1930’s, American football was a game mostly run on the ground. The Green Bay Packers‘ mid 1930’s QB-WR combo, the first modern one in history, of Arnie Herber and Don Hutson introduced a consistent passing attack, the likes of which had never been seen before.

The game would never be the same.

Much how the home run transformed baseball in the 1920s, the pass would change the face of football.

And football continues to this day evolving along passing lines.

Take a look at the top 20 quarterbacks with the most passing touchdowns in a season below. Minus Dan Marino (1984, 1986), Y.A. Tittle (1963) and George Blanda (1961), everybody on the list made their mark in 1994 or later, incuding four from 2011 alone!
