Alfonso Soriano Is Second All Time Leading Off a Game with a Home Run

Alfonso Soriano is a New York Yankee again, but won’t be leading off this time around. In his first game back, Soriano batted cleanup, as he has for much of the second half of his career.

Soriano’s lead off days are long gone, but before he understandably fell to the power slots in the batting order, he knocked 54 home runs to lead off a game (in his team’s first half inning).

Had Soriano stayed at the top of the batting order, he probably would have caught Rickey Henderson – the greatest lead-off hitter of all time. Henderson slammed 81 homers to start a baseball game, but Soriano hit his 54 in about one-quarter of the games.

Here are the top 20 players with the most lead-off home runs since 1952 (years of data available from my source, baseball-reference.com). That’s still solid data – not too many lead off batters were hitting these many home runs (especially at the top) before then.
