Major League Baseball’s Top Rookies of 2013 (Pitching)

Jose Fernandez - Best Rookie Pitcher Ever?

Jose Fernandez – Best Rookie Pitcher Ever?

Yesterday, we checked out the top rookie batters of 2013. Today, it’s the pitchers’ turns.

Major League Baseball itself is asking if the Miami MarlinsJose Fernandez‘ season is the “best by a rookie pitcher” ever, “comparable to those of Gooden, Valenzuela [and] Fidrych.”

Does that make him a shoo-in for the National League Rookie of the Year? Not necessarily.

The American League – the hitting and DH league – lags behind the NL a bit in rookie pitching. It’s a tossup between the Oakland A’s Dan Straily and the Tampa Bay RaysChris Archer as to who is the best young gun, neither of whom will come close to the AL award.
