Babe Ruth Is the Only Player to Hit Three Home Runs in a World Series Game (or Any Postseason Game) Twice

Let’s talk about two of the best things in baseball: home runs and the postseason.  Anything regarding either of the two, or both, is a popular post around here.

Today – how about most home runs hit in a postseason game? The answer is three. No one has ever hit four home runs in a single postseason contest. So who hit three homers in a playoff game and how many times has it happened?

Before we get to today’s list, take a quick look at some previous home run + postseason posts if you feel so inclined…

and finally, the tie-in to today’s post,

Players with the Most Home Runs in a World Series Game

That last list above includes everybody who has gone deep at least twice in a World Series game. Four players (five times) have hit three homers in a World Series game – in chronological order, Babe Ruth (twice), Reggie Jackson, Albert Pujols and Pablo Sandoval.

Oddly, the three-home run game has occurred more often in the Fall Classic than any other playoff round. Four other players hit three home runs in pre-WS rounds.

Over 40 years passed in between Ruth’s three-home run game in the 1928 World Series and Bob Robertson‘s NLCS effort in 1971. Only six years after that Jackson pulled off his 3-HRs-on-3-pitches performance for the New York Yankees.

George Brett followed the very next season with his record mark – his was the only in a losing effort.

The 2000’s have been quite ripe for this feat: four times this century, including three times in the past two years.

All nine three-home run postseason games are listed below:
