USC and Schools with the Most Rose Bowl Wins and Appearances

The Rose Bowl In Pasadena, California

The Rose Bowl In Pasadena, California

It makes some sense that the greatest team in Rose Bowl history is also one of Los Angeles’ home schools – USC, the University of Southern California Trojans. They have won the Rose Bowl – the “granddaddy of them all” – 24 times, way out in front of the second place Michigan Wolverines, who have won eight.

The Trojans have played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, just 30 minutes away from Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, since 1923.

The UCLA Bruins have called the Rose Bowl their regular-season home stadium since 1982. Before that, they played their home games at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, sharing it with the Trojans, since 1928. The Bruins have five Rose Bowl wins.

Together, these “home teams” have won 29 of the 100 Rose Bowls (the latter number includes this season’s upcoming contest – the 100th game).

The first Rose Bowl was played in 1902 (for the 1901 season), then was not played again until 1916 (for the 1915 season). Since then it has been played uninterrupted straight through to this season’s game which will see the Michigan State Spartans meeting the Stanford Cardinal on Jan. 1, 2014.

The Cardinal have already won the Rose Bowl six times, with an additional tie. The Spartans have won it three times.

The Rose Bowl is usually played on New Year’s Day  (85 times), but has also been played on Jan. 2 (+) 13 times, and Jan. 3 (^) and Jan. 4 (~) once apiece.

Here are all the Rose Bowl winners, sorted by schools with the most wins.

Below that, a bonus list – all 43 schools who have played in the Rose Bowl, ranked by most appearances. Again, USC and Michigan top the list.
