Quarterbacks with “Perfect Games” (Passer Rating = 158.3)

Alex Smith Is The Latest "Perfect" Quarterback

Alex Smith Is The Latest “Perfect” Quarterback

A nice, round (rather perfect) 50 NFL quarterbacks have thrown “perfect games” a total of 61 times, according to the passer rating statistic. A rating of 158.3 is the highest a QB can score.

Seven have done it several times. Tom Brady did it twice.

Craig Morton and Dave Krieg also did it twice – each for two different teams 12 and 11 years apart, respectively.

Even the New York Jets’ Ken O’Brien did it twice. Makes you wonder about the stat (and plenty of people d0).

Kurt Warner is a three-time perfector, as is Ben Roethlisberger.

But the king of perfect games is Peyton Manning: four times, including once in the playoffs – one of only four QBs with a perfect postseason game (noted with asterisks below). Perhaps that can give Manning’s postseason reputation a tiny boost.

So, what on earth is passer rating anyway?

Well, it’s a somewhat complicated formula that takes into account the following parameters: passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions. It attempts to evaluate a quarterback’s true efficiency. The numbers crunch into a range between 0.0 and 158.3.

In reverse chronological order below is every perfect game occurrence (minimum 10 pass attempts). You can click on the date to see each quarterback’s numbers for the day in the box score, courtesy pro-football-reference.com.
