Oklahoma and Schools with the Most Orange Bowl Wins and Appearances

The Orange Bowl - Now Played At Sun Life Stadium

The Orange Bowl – Now Played At Sun Life Stadium

The Orange Bowl has been played since the 1934 season. This year’s game – the 80th – will see the 12th ranked Clemson Tigers pitted against the 7th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, who have appeared now five and two times, respectively, in the Orange Bowl.

Fifty-one different schools have made it to the big game, all ranked in today’s second list by number of appearances.

The Oklahoma Sooners have both the most Orange Bowl appearances (18) and wins (12).

The “home team” – the Miami Hurricanes – is a ways off. The ‘Canes sit in third with nine appearances and six wins, in both cases behind the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Two quick facts about the Orange Bowl – it has never ended in a tie and only once, in 1996, has it not been played in the first week of January following the season. That year, the Orange Bowl was played on December 31st, so there were actually two Orange Bowls in 1996 (including the one in January following the 1995 season).
