Wayne Gretzky Had An Unbreakable 163 Assists In 1985-86

Wayne Gretzky…Wayne Gretzky…Wayne Gretzky and Wayne Gretzky another eight (!) times. The Great One holds 11 of the top 12 marks for assists in a single season. Just another in a long, long list of statistical rankings – be it for a single season or over a career – that Gretzky dominates, but this one in particular is ridiculous.

In 1985-86, Gretzky assisted on a whopping 163 goals. No one else – not even he – comes close (or ever will?). Gretzky’s second best, and the second best in NHL history, comes in at 135.

Only three skaters have ever recorded at least 100 assists in a season – Gretzky (11 times), Mario Lemieux (once) and Bobby Orr (once). Gretzky had 118 or more seven times. The next closest skater is Lemieux (and Gretzky again) with 114.

Here are the top 20 skaters with the most assists in a season.
