The Best Strikeout Pitchers In The Game Today, Tim Lincecum And Max Scherzer, Have Remarkably Different Wind Ups

Of the top 20 strikeout pitchers in the game today – over the course of their careers – the Los Angeles Dodgers have three of them in their starting rotation (two of whom have pitched no-hitters).

Their rival, though, and NL West-leading (at the time of this post) San Francisco Giants have the best strikeout pitcher of them all. It’s Tim Lincecum. He’s just a hair over more-sudden superstar Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers, who are the Dodgers’ counterparts in the American League. The Tigers, too, have three reps below.

Sure, you can look at the league’s cumulative strikeout leaders this year, but what about overall – the true natural and career-consistent – strikeout pitchers? In other words, who has the most strikeouts per innings pitched, or, more applicably, most strikeouts per what would be a complete game (sans extras): nine innings.

That would be these guys.

1. Tim Lincecum 9.56 R San Francisco Giants
2. Max Scherzer 9.52 R Detroit Tigers
3. Clayton Kershaw 9.34 L Los Angeles Dodgers
4. Oliver Perez 9.19 L Arizona Diamonbacks
5. Francisco Liriano 9.11 L Pittsburgh Pirates
6. Yovani Gallardo 8.72 (8.7224) R Miwaukee Brewers
7. Scott Kazmir 8.72 (8.7176) L Oakland A’s
8. Erik Bedard 8.62 L Tampa Bay Rays
9. Jake Peavy 8.56 R Boston Red Sox
10. Cole Hamels 8.54 L Philadelphia Phillies
11. Felix Hernandez 8.48 R Seattle Mariners
12. Justin Verlander 8.38 R Detroit Tigers
13. Josh Beckett 8.36 R Los Angeles Dodgers
14. David Price 8.34 L Tampa Bay Rays
15. A.J. Burnett 8.27 R Philadelphia Phillies
16. Ubaldo Jimenez 8.24 R Baltimore Orioles
17. Jon Lester 8.17 L Boston Red Sox
18. Zack Greinke 8.06 R Los Angeles Dodgers
19. C.J. Wilson 8.03 L Los Angeles Angels
20. Anibal Sanchez 7.98 R Detroit Tigers
