MLB: Left-Handed Pitchers with the Most Wins, Strikeouts and Saves in a Single-Season

Left-Handers With The Most Wins (Lefty Grove), Strikeouts (Sandy Koufax) And Saves (Randy Myers) In A Single Season

Some time back, Sports List of the Day covered left-handed pitchers with the most career wins and most career strikeouts.

Warren Spahn has the most wins – a whopping 363, but he never won more than 23 (he did win 20 or more an incredible 13 times, though). So Spahn misses hitting today’s first list, which ranks lefties with the most wins in a single season.

And appropriately, it’s Lefty Grove with the record (31). He’s the only lefty in MLB history* to break the 30-win barrier. Grove also won 28.

In total, 14 left-handed pitchers have won more than 25 games in a season. Grove, Sandy Koufax, Hal Newhouser and Eddie Plank did it twice.

Today’s second list – left-handed pitchers with the most K’s in a season – is more in sync with the career list. They’re both dominated by Randy Johnson. Johnson holds the career strikeout record for lefties with 4,875 – and he appears five times on the single-season list.

But Sandy Koufax is king of the left-handed hill, here. His 382 strikeouts in 1965 was the all-time record (regardless of arm) until righty Nolan Ryan reset it by one in 1973.

Finally, a more modern mounting statistic – saves, led on the left-handed side of things by another Randy, Randy Myers. He’s the only lefty to break the 50-save barrier. The ten relievers (stoppers or closers, really) listed in today’s third featured list are all the left-handers who made it to 40.
