The United States Wins Its Fifth FIBA Basketball World Cup In 2014

The USA wins again! – but probably not as often as you’d expect over time. The Americans do have the most (newly-named) FIBA Basketball World Cup titles.  It was called the FIBA World Championship until the last go-round in 2010, which the States also won.

But the U.S. didn’t win as recently as 1998 (Serbia, no NBA players), 2002 (Serbia) or even 2006 (Spain!).

Hard to believe looking at this year’s domination, but there is competition out there, or at least has been until very, very recently recently.

The first World Championship was held in 1950, and won by Argentina. NBA players were not eligible until 1994.

The USSR and Yugoslavia have won three championships apiece, but if you include Serbia’s under the Yugoslavian umbrella, that would be five, tying the U.S.

In a second list below, find every single country that has participated in the FIBA Basketball World Cup. There are 56 of them, sorted by those with the most appearances.

2014 participants are noted in green bold.
