MLB: The 20 Worst Teams to Win the World Series

The 1918 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox Won Just 75 Games

The 1918 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox Won Just 75 Games

Here’s an interesting stat. A full 90 percent of World Series winning teams (98 of 109) had at least 91 wins during the regular season. Only 11 teams – even going allll the way back to the very first World Series in 1903 – had fewer. And that includes two strike-shortened seasons (*)!

Not only is that pretty amazing, but it also shows one of the things that makes baseball great and cherishable – its continuity.

It also shows that you better be good enough to win a lot of games in order to be good enough to win the World Series.

Regardless of the number of teams in the league or even the number of games played in a season, over 100 years of baseball sees most title teams winning 91 or more – and actually quite a lot more.

Only another 15 teams won either 91 or 92 games their championship season.

Let’s sum. Three-quarters (76 percent) of all World Series winners won at least 93 games during the year.

Here are the “worst” teams to win the World Series. Admittedly, that’s a misnomer. Let’s call it the World Series champs with the fewest wins.
