Madison Bumgarner and the Top 20 Pitchers with the Most World Series Wins

A Young (21) Whitey Ford After His First (1950) Of 10 World Series Wins

A Young (21) Whitey Ford After His First (1950) Of 10 World Series Wins

San Francisco Giants‘ hurler Madison Bumgarner just joined some elite company with his fourth World Series win tonight.

In the history of baseball, only 36 pitchers have won at least that many World Series games. It’s hard enough just getting there – and if you’re lucky enough to do so, there are only so many starts or chances to go around.

What’s more, Bumgarner is one of only five pitchers that have accumulated that many victories in the past 30 years.

Whitey Ford is at the top of today’s list, holding on to what could be an unbreakable record: 10 wins over seven World Series.

Then you have Red Ruffing, Allie Reynolds and Bob Gibson with seven.

What do the top four have in common?

Old school…and an older, different kind of game.

It’s hard to conceive of “today’s” pitcher in “today’s” league not only winning that many, but having the opportunity to do so. Even the latest (Derek Jeter) New York Yankees dynasty that collected five championships only has one representative amongst the top 20, below.

Andy Pettitte, despite being in all those World Series mustered just five wins in total. Of course, that’s not to say he didn’t pitch well, just that there were a handful of sweeps in there (and so fewer starts) and no-decisions.

The five pitchers mentioned above include Pettitte, now Bumgarner, Jack Morris, Tom Glavine, and Curt Schilling.

As for the rest, as usual, the Yankees represent most of the players with World Series credits – 13 of the 36 played for the Bronx Bombers.
