NBA 2014-15: Team Payrolls and Salary Cap Hits (and vs. 2013-14)

The Highest Payroll In The NBA - Still The Brooklyn Nets

The Highest Payroll In The NBA – Still The Brooklyn Nets

Even after shedding Paul Pierce‘s $15.3 million, the Brooklyn Nets continue to have the highest payroll in the NBA for a second season in a row. But it’s dipped below the $100M mark, so no team goes there in 2014-15.

The New York Knicks, who were second in payroll last season, have fallen to third behind a big surprise. The Portland Trail Blazers leapt from 20th in 2013-14 to second on a $26M increase (more than 40 percent) in player salary.

What other big climbers out there?

How about the Charlotte Hornets nee Bobcats? They climbed 10 slots from 23rd to 13th. Naturally, the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ payroll jumped with the taking on of LeBron James again.

In turn, the Miami Heat fell from third overall to seventh.

Nobody bottoms the Los Angeles Lakers, though, in financial freefall. They dropped nine large in payroll when Pau Gasol went to the Chicago Bulls and dropped from fifth all the way to 20th.

What about the real cheap-o franchise out there?

The Philadelphia 76ers are shelling out a laughable $38.7M this year. Eight players in the league make over $20M each, more than half the Sixers payroll.

Philly is one of just six teams under the cap, and one of nine teams that cut costs.

Two popular and chock-full-of-financial-info lists for you today. First, by division, every NBA team’s 2014-15 total payroll and cap hit (the salary cap this season is $63,065,000). Second, the straight up sorted payrolls from top to bottom – and compared to 2013-14, too.
