The San Francisco 49ers Are The Best Road Team In The NFL

Since 1970, year of the merger, no team has won more games on the road than the San Francisco 49ers, but it’s crowded at the top.

The Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers – three more storied franchises – also have over 170 wins away.

It’s hard to knock the bottom four squads – Carolina Panthers (1995), Baltimore Ravens (1996), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and Houston Texans (2002). They just haven’t been around long enough to accumulate wins, home or away for that matter.

In fact, take a look at today’s second list, one more fairly based on road wins per season. There, the Ravens rise from 30th to 13th and the Panthers from 29th to 15th.

Based on the averages, the top four teams (still the same) have won just about half of their road games a season (nearly four of eight scheduled – and don’t forget, between 1970-1978 there were only 14 games on the schedule and thus only seven away games).

So, then, who are the official worst road teams? Likely, the worst teams overall over the past 45 seasons, you’d guess. And you’d be right.

Nine losers (and just one Super Bowl amongst them) have won less than three away games on average, and the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are closer to two.
