NFL Defensive Rookies of the Year by Team and Position

New York Jets Defensive Rookies Of The Year: Sheldon Richardson, Jonathan Vilma, Hugh Douglas And Erik McMillan

The NFL, unlike the three other major North American sports leagues, offers two Rookie of the Year awards per season, one for offense (covered yesterday) and one for defense.

And in a twist, it’s the New York Jets that actually hold a league-wide team record. They have the most Defensive Rookie of the Years, four, including last season’s winner, Sheldon Richardson.

Another six teams have had three winners. In 1980, two players won the DROY – and from the same team: Atlanta Falcons‘ linebackers Buddy Curry and Al Richardson.

In fact, linebackers overall have won the most DROYs – 25 of them (out of 48* – a little more than half).

And it looks like the same is true in 2014. Who’s in the running heading into Week 14?

It’s a two-man race between another two LBs: Baltimore Ravens‘ inside linebacker C.J. Mosley and Oakland Raiders‘ outside linebacker Khalil Mack.
