The Worst Teams in NFL History (Most All-Time Losses and Most Losses per Season)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Lose A Lot

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Lose A Lot

The Cardinals franchise – through Chicago, St. Louis and now Arizona – has the most losses in NFL history, the only team with over 700 losses.

Give them a bit of a break, though. The Cards have been around since year 1 (1920). They and the Chicago Bears are the only two franchises that have been around from the very start, but the Bears “only” have 543 losses, giving them the best losses-per-season ratio of all 32 franchises.

The Detroit Lions‘ first season was 10 years later (1930). They are next in all-time losses, the only other team with at least 600 of them.

All together, nine NFL teams have lost at least 500 times. They’ve all been around at least 78 years.

That makes it a bit unfair to tag these losers with a “worst team” reference.

Who really are the worst all-time teams in NFL History?

Check the second list below, which simply divides all-time losses by number of years in existence.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the worst NFL franchise by this measure (and they are repeating history in 2014 at 2-12 so far). The Bucs have lost more than a depressing 9.5 games a season since their beginning in 1976. They and the far more nascent Houston Texans are the only teams with at least nine losses a year.

Another eight teams have lost over eight a season over time (more than half the current 16-game schedule), making 10 teams who usually lose more than they win.
