NFL: Teams with the Most Losing Seasons (Under .500)

The NFL's Cardinals Franchise, Through St. Louis And Arizona, Have Accumulated Nearly 60 Losing Seasons

The NFL’s Cardinals Franchise, Through Chicago, St. Louis And Arizona, Have Accumulated A Long Line Of Losing Seasons – Nearly 60 Of Them

If you’re old enough, you might remember just how awful the New England Patriots were in their early history, and especially before Tom Brady. The Pats, and their uniforms, held court as the jester of the NFL for a couple decades.

It’s a little surprising, then, to see them fare so well on today’s list, one that tallies every team’s number of losing seasons. The Patriots have only had 13 – less than 30 percent of their 45 seasons, and fourth best amongst all 32 franchises.

The top three? In order:  The Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers. Only one-fifth of the Dolphins’ campaigns were losing ones.

On the flip side, 10 teams have had more (or an equal number of, in the case of the Philadelphia Eagles) losing seasons than winning ones.

Of the five worst teams – those with 60 percent or more losing seasons – four of them make up the whole NFC South (and, in keeping with tradition, not one will have a winning season in 2014).
