Lionel Messi Is Now La Liga’s All-Time Hat Trick Leader

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi notched his 24th hat trick today, eking by Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo for the most tricks in La Liga’s 87-year history.

The 30-year old Ronaldo is still in the game, though, so the record books are not yet closed. Both footballers have 30 league goals this season and are playing at similar levels.

It’s clear that the level of La Liga talent and play has flourished over the past decade and change – and has exploded revenue.

Of the top 10 Liga footballers, including ties, with the most hat tricks, the remaining nine played in the 1960’s or earlier.
