One of the utterly most exclusive clubs in the world? How about women membership in the two most prestigious golf clubs on Earth, Augusta National and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club?

That grouping counts 10 members in total. And it was just three before today.

Back in September, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (founded 261 years ago in 1754), voted at last to admit female members.

And today, the first seven honored ladies were announced. Six are some of the best golfers, male or female, to ever hit the courses, including modern phenom and arguably the best woman golfer of all (especially given the level of the modern competition), Annika Sorenstam.

Then there’s Dame Laura Davies, who, according to Sorenstam’s website, “is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest female golfer.”

Three long-time dominating golf amateurs and Louise Suggs, who helped found the LPGA itself, round out the six.

The seventh invitee is an honorary membership bestowed on Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. There are similar royal honoraries on the men’s side regardless of golf play.

Augusta National Golf Club, opened in 1933 and home of the legendary Masters tournament since 1934, broke its gender barrier in 2012, with the admission of Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore. Talented and brilliant ladies, but not exactly pro-golf material.

And just last November, major Masters sponsor IBM CEO Ginni Rometty became the third female member.

Perhaps we’ll see some LPGA players in the near future.

More to come, surely.
