Yu Darvish, Dwight Gooden and the Top 20 Pitchers with the Most Strikeouts as a Rookie

Dwight Gooden: Most Strikeouts by a Rookie

Dwight Gooden: Most Strikeouts by a Rookie

Look out Matt Harvey – another second-year pitcher is on fire – and has more strikeouts than you (186 to 172 as of the date of this post). That would be the Texas RangersYu Darvish, who just struck out 14 batters for the fourth time this season.

Darvish made a splash (and the record books) in his rookie season last year in a similar fashion – striking everybody out. He K’d 221, the seventh most by a rookie pitcher in baseball history.

So far, no one’s been able to touch the all-time rookie leader, though – Dr. K himself, Dwight Gooden. Gooden fanned 276 his first year at the ripe old age of 19, breaking Herb Score’s 30-year old record.

There are a couple of pitchers this year, though, who might be able to crack today’s list: the top 20 pitchers with the most strikeouts in their rookie season. The Miami MarlinsJose Fernandez is sitting on 138 K’s and the St. Louis CardinalsShelby Miller is at 132.
